In India, currently Daimler India Commercial Vehicles deals with three exciting brands ie., BharatBenz, Mercedes-Benz and FUSO which are leading brands for the present and the future. With these brands, it has a formidable best-in-class portfolio of high-quality reliable trucks which meet the customer’s expectations while offering optimal TCO (total cost of ownership), reliability and superior value for money proposition.

Having realized the potential of the emerging Indian trucking market, it set about understanding the Indian trucking industry while compiling the road load data. In 2010, as a first show of its commitment to manufacture the right trucks for India, a full-fledged test track was constructed to ensure that products were reliable and met the demanding technical requirements.

The year 2011 witnessed the birth of BharatBenz as a brand which would offer a whole range of modern trucks that were to be made for India, in India. Simultaneously, efforts were in full swing to set up a dependable base of local suppliers to provide quality components and sub-assemblies which provided an indigenization level of 85%. This provided an advantage to DICV in becoming a serious player in the Indian mass volume truck market, with BharatBenz.

In January 2012, DICV held a media engagement wherein a BharatBenz truck was previewed to reinforce the message that the project was on track and BharatBenz will provide a new trucking experience. Later in March, at the exclusive BharatBenz Premiere event, nine models were showcased for its customers wherein there was an opportunity to test drive them also.

The next milestone was the inaurugration of the state-of-the-plant by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Dr. J. Jayalalithaa on 18 April 2012 along with Dr. Dieter Zetsche the Chairman of Board, Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars.

The BharatBenz ‘Power Yatra’ was also flagged off on that day, wherein nine trucks set out on a 71 day journey that spanned 8,000 kms along the golden quadrilateral covering 22 key cities. This activity not only proved the reliability of the truck but also help gaining traction with the different target groups.

In June, series production of the first heavy-duty trucks commenced. On September 26th, the first set of BharatBenz trucks was commercially launched to the market. Through its growing network of state-of-the art BharatBenz dealerships, the reach of BharatBenz is now closer than ever to its customers. It also focuses on pro-active service in the after-sales area, so as to enable customers to make optimum use of their trucks. 

Recently in line with the Asian Business model, DICV manufactures the FUSO range of trucks which are destined for the exports markets from its hometown of Chennai, India.
